Nelson Mandela was arrested outside Howick in Kwazulu-Natal in August 1962. Mandela was serving a 5-year sentence for inciting persons to strike illegally and for leaving the country without a valid passport. He was sentenced to Life imprisonment at the Rivonia Trial. He served 27 years on Robben Island and in the Pollsmoor and Victor Verster prisons.

Walter Sisulu was arrested at Liliesleaf in the Thatched Cottage on 11 July 1963, Sisulu was sentenced to life imprisonment at the Rivonia Trial. He served 26 years on Robben Island and in Pollsmoor prison.

Denis Goldberg was arrested at Liliesleaf in the lounge of the main house on 11 July. Goldberg was sentenced to life imprisonment at the Rivonia Trial. He served 22 years in Pretoria Central Prison. Which at that time was the only prison that had a security wing for white political prisoners.

Ahmed Kathrada was arrested in the Thatched Cottage on 11 July 1963. He was sentenced to life imprisonment at the Rivonia Trial. Kathrada served 26 years in prison on Robben Island and Pollsmoor prison.

Lionel ‘Rusty’ Bernstein was arrested at Liliesleaf in the Thatched Cottage on the 11 July 1963. At the end of the Rivonia Trial, Bernstein was acquitted and went in exile. While in exile he tirelessly worked for the abolition of apartheid. He returned to South Africa in 1994.
