In 1961 Nelson Mandela went into hiding from October 1961 he lived at Liliesleaf under the alias of David Motsamayi and posed as the gardener. He stayed in this room when the Goldreich’s moved to Liliesleaf in December 1961. In January 1962 he left Liliesleaf on a secret military mission though Africa, returning in July 1962.

The subsequently travelled to KwaZulu Natal to brief the ANC President, Chief Albert Luthuli on the outcomes of the mission. On his return to Johannesburg, he was arrested near Howick
